Theatre Review: Alice in Wonderland – Northern Stage

For our annual Christmas treat, I took our own girls to see Alice in Wonderland by Northern Stage. The girls had experienced James and The Giant Peach the previous year and we loved the creativity of the team and the high artistic standards. Alice in Wonderland didn’t disappoint. The cast were just as multi-talented as the previous year and the theatre had been transformed into the round. The set was spectacular and the show throughout was visually stunning. This was a bold and creatively brave production, veering away from the traditional and pushing the boundaries but not too far away that the children didn’t ‘get it’ The show ended with a chaotic foam prop cake fight with the audience.

One of my girls was thrilled that an actor sat next to us during the production through that wonderful lack of the fourth wall and presented her with a jam tart prop that she was told she could keep. Brilliant and bonkers but especially thrilled that a production of this calibre was created in Newcastle for Newcastle. These kind of productions, truly inspire young people and show them what is possible right here where they live.
